No, this isn’t the name of a would-be summer blockbuster or even a crappy album title. This is merely a summary of all the flurry of events that happened yesterday when the news broke that digitalsoap was one of ten companies chosen from over three-hundred (the number looks bigger when it’s spelled out) applicants to the TechStars Summer Program. Yesterday was crazy…something we’ve never experienced before, but rightfully so. There’s never been any reason to really put ourselves out there, as we’re still deep in development.
But the attention yesterday was very cool…it showed that there may be some people out there geniunely interested in what we’ve got going on. I guess I can start off by mentioning some of the stuff that went on yesterday.
First off, in case some of you didn’t see it, TechCrunch ran an article about the companies that were selected for this summer’s TechStars program out in Boulder, CO. We were required to keep tight-lipped about this announcement for a few weeks and let me tell you this much, it was insanely hard. I wanted to jump on here all excited and tell everyone out there that we were really getting off the ground with things, but I couldn’t. Being on the front page of TechCrunch, if even just for a single solitary mention was really cool. First time I saw “socialthing!” my heart kind of skipped a beat just a little. It’s that feeling that you get when you realize “this is really happening, this isn’t a dream”.
Indeed, this isn’t a dream, it’s very real. We’re working very hard to bring to market the best social networking app seen to date and that’s no easy task. Yes, the article garnered some negative comments ranging from stuff about how creating a social networking site is *so* original these days or how this proves that there is a web 2.0 bubble. Well, yes I can admit that just copying the models of other websites like MySpace and Facebook really isn’t cool anymore *ahem* Virb *ahem*. It was hard for me to hold back and not tell these people all the great things that socialthing! is going to do, but I simply had to keep shut.
Socialthing! is going to bring some completely new and compelling features to market that really haven’t been done before. It’s impossible to really mention any of these features without giving away the whole secret.
So with that, even though I wanted to, I had to refrain from certain comments on the TechCrunch post.
But that’s not where all the attention ended. A few other blogs had run the article and that was pretty cool. A friend of mine here from the St. Louis area wrote a blog on how St. Louis needs an incubator program similar to TechStars and I would have to agree.
We got a flurry of new applicants to the socialthing! Mailing List/Beta Program and we got a few new blog subscribers (hi new people). All in all, it was one hell of a day yesterday…all except for the morning, when the BlackBerry servers decided to not respond and never send me email…gotta love it.
Well anyways, we’re going to keep blogging (unlike before where we had a nearly 9 month lapse), we’ll put up some video blogs (as soon as we get our new computers…they’re on their way) and we’ll keep you informed. Thanks for sticking with us…it’s going to be a wild ride!
