That’s because there’s just so much to talk about that it can’t be contained in one blog title.
Where do I start?
socialthing! development has been trucking along really well. We’ve been working very hard to get our second major revision to our code out, and it was dropped at around 6am Monday morning, which was a HUGE relief. Well, until the bug reports started coming in
But let’s skip back a bit, it’s been a while since I’ve last blogged so let’s touch on what’s been up at the socialthing! camp in the past few weeks.
As we’ve been preparing to release st! Demo 2, we’ve been working hard at refining our investor pitch that we’ll give in less than two weeks here to a room full of investors. Sure haven’t felt the pressure, nope, not at all. *I bet you can just feel the sarcasm seeping from me right now* It’s been pretty rough getting to this point.
After our first pitch, we got some pretty good feedback. Some of that feedback was positive, the rest, while absolutely constructive, wasn’t quite so hot. But let me tell you this much…the constructive criticism was hands-down the best things for me. It put me in my place…made me realize that a pitch isn’t something you just craft and then say “here it is”. It’s something you pour your blood, sweat and tears into. It’s something that you work at over and and over again and recite it until you are blue in the face.
So one day after, I met with one of our mentors and he basically told me how it was, and some tips for improving the pitch. Back to the grind. All Wednesday of last week I spent refining my pitch. I finally started feeling pretty proud of it. Thursday morning, I got to the office early, started working hard on the presentation that would go along with the pitch and finished up just a few hours before our next pitch practice which was last Thursday. I showed it to some of the other TechStars and David and they loved it.
I presented it later that night to a panel of three prominent entrepreneurs and got some great feedback. One bit of that was that they liked my delivery method, which got me thinking. I really am pretty “playful” with this new pitch. One thing I learned about all of this is that you really have to be comfortable when you’re up there in front of anyone. When I was first pitching, I wasn’t in my zone, I wasn’t me, and I think that really got to me. It made me anxious. This time, I just got up there and let the crowd have it. And you know what? It was awesome. My critic said that he liked my “conversational” tone and that it really spoke to the audience.
So I guess if there’s a moral to that story, it’s this: If you’re ever going to do something where you’re the center of attention, whether it be you’re pitching to investors, or being a star in a theater production, or even reciting something in speech class, make sure you feel comfortable with yourself. This is one of the most important things you could ever do for yourself.
Ok now fast forward a little bit of time (and a change of subject)…this weekend we worked some more long hours and cranked and cranked on the code for socialthing! We got the long-awaited demo out in the wee hours of Monday morning and we were really happy, and went home in good moods. We stayed in those good moods throughout the day even though we were working really hard to squash all of the bugs that were found in the process.
Having active beta testers is really awesome for a site in production. Five active beta users is way more useful than 1,000 not-so-active users. We’ve been getting some great feedback, and for that I’m grateful.
Which leads me to tonight. We’re cranking on getting revision 2 of the new demo out and Ben and Brian are working super-hard. Since I’m mostly front-end design and business stuff, with my designs to them, I’ve just been directing the project, and mainly so that we have a rock solid demo tomorrow night at the Denver/Boulder New Tech Meetup. This will be our first public showing of what we do, so I’m pretty excited about that.
Anyways, TechStars Investor Day is coming up very quickly. There will be some really big names there (as well as some people that we already know, which is great). We will keep you in the loop as we prepare.
Thanks for reading!
